Kahnawà:ke Land Back

It's Still Ours

Kahnawà:ke has experienced tremendous losses of land throughout Canada’s history from the French Regime.

It’s crucial that Kahnawa’kehró:non are kept informed about these land losses, as land is of the utmost importance to our community.

The Seigneury of Sault St. Louis (SSSL) Land Grievance is particularly important to Kahnawà:ke and the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) focuses its efforts on resolving this grievance in a way that reflects the community’s principles and values. Kahnawa’kehró:non have always asserted that lands must be repatriated, and that compensation for the damages suffered must be paid. It has always been important to Kahnawà:ke that compensation provide for both economic losses suffered due to the taking of the lands, and for the loss of use of these lands. In an effort to resolve this long-standing land grievance, Canada has agreed to enter into discussions with MCK to address this historical wrong-doing and to seek resolution. The MCK will use this website to present the history of the SSSL and offer a space that community members and other interested parties can rely upon for up-to-date information on the land grievance.
